Y'allternative

For those who have lived in the Texas Panhandle for an extended time, you might understand the frustration of being depicted in a specific light – as if we all vote, love, and live the same way. Our large, connected network of caring partners helps to paint a true picture of life here – a community filled with diverse individuals who hope to love and take care of each other. Y'allternative is meant to celebrate and embrace all parts of who we are. Whether you’re a cowpoke or a punk rocker, this event honors who you are and brings you closer to others who exist in this unique space.

THE EVENT WILL FEATURE LOCAL VENDORS, FOOD TRUCKS, AND A LIVE DJ! FEEL FREE TO DRESS UP AND B.Y.O.B.! the event is all-ages, but the after-party at r&R is 21+.

Lauren Meckel - “Bad Girls Upset By The Truth”

Lauren Meckel - “Bad Girls Upset By The Truth”

bad girls upset by the truth is a semi-autobiographical country cabaret written by lubbock native Jo carol pierce. jo carol cut her teeth with the likes of other lubbock legends such as butch hancock, joe ely, and jimmie dale gilmore, to whom she was married briefly. she moved to austin in the 80s and started to make a name for herself as a songwriter and performer. despite receiving acclaim amongst her fellow performers, she would not release her first album, bad girls, until 1995 when she was in her 50s.

bad girls is a musical comedy unlike any other. jo carol, like tom t. hall or john prine, has a gift for depicting the everyday tragedies of life with cutting and astute humor. she also revels in raunch with songs like “does god have us by the twat or what?” and “vaginal angel.”

with jo carol’s blessing, lauren meckel has revived bad girls and re-introduced it to a modern audience. meckel first performed bad girls at the edinburgh festival fringe in 2019. when she returned to the states, she took bad girls on the road for a few performances in texas before covid shut the world down. meckel’s performance at caliche will be her first since before the pandemic.

a few more words about meckel: she’s one of those people of envious talent. she has a phd in anthropology, and she is currently an instructor at lsu. she’s also a trained actor, appearing most recently in the netflix film look both ways. we are incredibly excited to have meckel at caliche.

this is one event that you really won’t want to miss!

trigger warning: performance contains instances of suicide ideation.

IN-STORE: Alex Dupree feat. M. Walker

Alex Dupree is a published poet and songwriter living in Austin, TX. In the mid 00s, he founded the Trapdoor Band, an improvisatory folk group and vehicle for his lyric-driven songwriting. He released three albums under that name before switching to the Idyl moniker in 2009. During this time, he also played guitar in Zookeeper, the new folk-rock project of Austin emo pioneer Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record, Mountain Time).

After two more albums as Idyl, Dupree moved to California to focus on poetry, studying and teaching at UC Irvine, with songwriting never far from his mind. He continued to hone his craft writing country songs for the LA band Mister Paradise and a duet project with Whitney Mower (They/Live) called Dawn & Dupree. Despite a deep love for country music, Dupree’s songs never quite settle in that category though, absorbing additional influences from the likes of Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Bjork, and John Cale.

2017’s You Winsome, You Lonesome was the first album Alex Dupree released under his own name. It’s a sturdy songwriter’s album with heady, heavy doses of indie rock and country flourishes that drew comparisons to both Bill Callahan and Willie Nelson. His latest project is the upcoming Thieves, produced by Michael Krassner (Califone, Simon Joyner, Boxhead Ensemble), which features a cast of LA musicians such as Max Knouse and Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples) alongside Trapdoor Band regulars like Aisha Burns and Matt Matherne.

His forthcoming album Thieves finds Dupree returning to the root of his fascination with folk ballads to deliver songs of deep mystery and timeless storytelling. Keeled Scales will be releasing the new LP in 2022 and reissuing You Winsome, You Lonesome across all physical formats and streaming platforms.
