Ann Callen "With Everything That's Going On..." Art Reception @ Lasso Gallery
Ann Callen - With Everything That’s Going on…
Ann's recent work is about contemporary society's expectations of people in their gender roles, but her particular focus is on women and the struggles they endure in a world that still lacks equity and equality. Her work responds to the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, expectations of gender roles; dealing with domesticity, body image, workplace power struggles, and violence against women. Ann explores these social constructs and constrictions through the concept of 'boxes and labels'. To counteract this limiting aspect, she focuses on surface treatment and distorts a standardized box label with words that echo words of conditioning received starting at a young age. Showing how the standardization and commercialization of the common box must be overridden to find one's voice. By reacting to those oppressive verbal labels and the confinements of being put into a box in a figurative sense, she engages the audience to experience the words meant to have power or control. Satirizing the original standard text in ways that challenge and rewrite the labels she creates in her work forces the audience into an intimate space to deal with or fit into these 'social norms'. She primarily uses screen and relief printing to express herself but also draws, collages, and plays with photography and ceramics.
Ann has 25 years of experience as a graphic designer and eleven years as a director of a creative shop. She is a recent empty-nester with three adult children. She loves her plants, pets, visiting art galleries and museums, and attending live music. She received her B.F.A .in Graphic Design (1999) and M.F.A. in Studio Art (2022) both from West Texas A&M University.
Little Mazarn w/ Cowboy Cold LIVE @ Caliche
Little mazarn (Austin)
“The music of Little Mazarn is a cool float a few feet from the ground through a dimly lit, almost familiar forest. It is quieter than silence, big as everything, still but always moving. If you’ve ever had flying dreams, or an amazing night time bike ride on LSD, this might be a world for you. Chords are made up of notes; Little Mazarn gives them all their own moment. There are NO superfluous notes played here. Lindsey’s kind and twisting voice ambles along over the spare sounds of Jeff Johnston’s saw bowing, Ralph White’s electric mbira wanderings, and her own slow banjo. Like DJ Screw, Bohren & Der Club of Gore, and anyone who chooses to walk instead of ride, Lindsey realizes the amazing power of slow… slow… slow music. Lindsey is at once a baby and a wise old man. Get in this canoe at dawn on some Texas river that remembers when Comanche slept under the stars.” — Thor Harris, Talkhouse
Cowboy Cold (Austin)
West Texas-tinged shoegaze that recalls Zuma-era Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Cowboy Cold is the moniker of Lubbock-native—and Caliche frequent-flyer—Will Felty. This will mark Felty’s third or fourth time performing at Caliche, and we’re honored to have him back.

Paa Joe Art Opening Reception @ Lasso Gallery
Lasso Gallery is honored to present the work of internationally acclaimed Ghanaian artist Paa Joe.
Graphic by Megan Moore
The artist is a cultural icon in Ghana; working with the elements of life, death and the transition to the afterlife. For six decades the artist has created “fantasy coffins”. Paa Joe creates work that celebrates the individual’s life and interests, (a lion for a public leader, green onion for a farmer etc.)
This tradition was started by his uncle Kane Kwei who pioneered the first figurative coffin in the early 1950’s. The tradition was furthered by Paa Joe who has taken this craft to great heights, these coffins are no longer seen as solely vehicles to the afterlife but art objects.
Paa Joe was propelled to global acclaim in 1989 following a show at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France. Since that time his works have gone on to exhibit all over the globe. Acquired by permanent collections like The British Museum (London, England), The Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, USA), The National Museum of Funeral History (Houston, USA), and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Boston, USA). Also collected by private dignitaries and even a US president.
The artist's work has been documented in two books Going into Darkness and The Buried Treasures of the Ga.
There has also been a full-length film made, Paa Joe & The Lion. This film will be shown here in Amarillo On December 28th.
